Sunday Selections #7

No matter what the original idea is behind a song, they, especially ones with lyrics, will always be interpreted differently by the listener. Always so enigmatic with their lyrics, Beth Gibbons (lead vocalist of Portishead), sings this chillingly heartbreaking song that I think is about decisions. Roads - we go down a different road each time we make a choice. We won’t know until we’ve made the choice whether it was the right one or not. Sometimes we make poor decisions and “never find our way regardless of what they say.” Then, things reach a boiling point at which we ask “how can it feel this wrong?” If music has the power to heal, I personally think this one is fittingly consoling for how our hearts have ached because of events that have happened in the past week. I sit in solitude, mulling over if the “roads” I’ve taken so far in my life have contributed for the betterment of this society and how I can do better if they haven’t been.

Much like Roads, this song also hits close to home. Sophie Barker sings in the most soothing voice in this song by British band, Zero 7. In The Waiting Line was one of the soundtracks in the movie Garden State directed by Zach Braff (the Scrubs guy).

Some might disagree, but I would say Sneaker Pimps (yet another 90s British band) were a one-hit-wonder. The wonder being this song, 6 Underground. It was featured in several movies including Cruel Intentions (1999), The Watcher (2000) and Remember the Daze (2007) and in TV series like Beverly Hills, 90210 ("Friends in Deed" - 1997) and Roswell ("Tess, Lies and Videotape" - 2000). It also appears in the video game Grand Theft Auto V.
